The Mexican educational system is traditionally built on strict discipline and rote learning. Teachers often lack proper training and the country’s educational system ranks poorly in international surveys.
As parents – some of us with teaching backgrounds – we were concerned about the prospect of sending our young children to a school system that we in no way sympathize with. Together, we decided to create an alternative: a pre-school that is based on values that will benefit our children and their personal development. This initiative became reality on July 13th, 2009, when Papalotes opened its doors to our children for the very first time.
Papalotes is the State of Oaxaca’s first bilingual pre-school that is based on the Montessori, Waldorf and Freinet educational theories and with an extra focus on art and ecology. We want to teach our children to become harmonious and capable individuals with a solid knowledge of the self and with a deep respect for others and the world we live in.
Papalotes is a parent cooperative, which means that parents of children that go to Papalotes are a vital part of the running, the ongoing development and the financing of the school.
